Resolution for 2010

This time of year is when everyone talks about making resolutions for the new year.  I was considering not making any because I rarely follow through with them.  I have found myself to be more of the “glass is half empty” type rather than the “glass is half full” type, so I have decided on a resolution to be more positive.

I truly believe that being more positive or optimistic will help with a number of factors, such as, more confidence, better overall health (better food choices/exercise more) and enhanced urge to learn.

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Winston Churchill

Now that I have this newfound optimism, I have been looking for resources to give me more ideas as well as help me stay positive…no matter how bad things may get Big Grin. Below are some sites that I feel I will continue to reference through my endeavor.

I am optimistic that my resolution will help me with the following: 1) Be a better wife/daughter/sister/friend.  2) Continue to do well in school.  3) Learn more to help with my career.

Most important, being more optimistic should make me more happy, which is my goal. :-)

I wish you a prosperous 2010

Movies I’m Looking Forward To (March-May 2009)

I know this is a very non-technical post, but we gotta have fun sometime…right?  There are several movies that I am looking forward to over the next 3 months.

Watchmen (3/6/09)
I have to say I never read the graphic novels for the Watchmen, but the awesome trailers and soundtrack have made this one really hard to pass up….I will definitely be sitting in an IMAX theater on opening weekend.

Race to Witch Mountain (3/13/09)
When I was a kid, there was nothing better in my book than Escape to Witch Mountain (and Return From WM was ok too). I’m not too sure how happy I am about this remake, but the trailers make me really want to see it.

Know1ng (3/20/09)
I’m not a huge Nicholas Cage fan, but the subject of this movie just fascinates me.

Fast and Furious (4/3/09)
I loved the first F & F, the rest of them…not so much.  This one has the original cast members from the first movie, so I’m pretty psyched about it.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (5/1/09)
This movie looks action-packed and seeing as I like all the X-Men movies to date, can’t let this one get by.

StarTrek (5/8/09)
This is the one I am most looking forward to.  StarTrek has been part of my life as long as I can remember.

Terminator Salvation (5/22/09)
Yes even with Christian Bale’s hissy fit….I still want to see Terminator.  Being a fan of the previous movies and the series, I can’t pass it up.

Happy movie-watching!!!

Merry Christmas

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.  The below picture that I took of a plaque at my Aunt’s house contain some great words to live by.

Hurricane Ike – The Aftermath

Hurricane Ike swept through on the night of September 12th. I have to say it was pretty scary at times.  We had put boards on all of our windows the day before and about 1 hr into the storm, the boards had blown off all of the front windows.  Guess we should have used more ply locks. There was a period of time that we were stationed in the closet because we thought something would surely come through the unprotected windows.  Luckily, that did not happen. We made it through the storm with minimal damage to the house, but we did lose our fence.

The aftermath of Ike shows utter devastation for Galveston, TX. The island was practically flooded before the Ike even arrived. I was on Galveston Island 2 weeks prior and cannot imagine the waves coming over the sea wall much less flooding the streets.

Ike Brings Waves to Galveston – Video

As far as Pearland & Friendswood, most of the damage consisted of roof damage and downed trees/fences/power lines. A lot of gas stations took damage to awnings and gas pumps. All of the Houston/Galveston area (4 million people) is suffering a power outage. Luckily a front moved through bringing the temperatures down to a low of 60 and high of 80. You would not believe how much of a relief this is considering the temperatures are usually into the 90s easily.

I have seen so many people helping people, it makes me proud to be part of this community. My neighbor has a natural gas generator and was nice enough to let us run an extension cord so we could power our refrigerator and a fan.  My husband is now helping our neighbor’s son who had some water damage to his home. There were even some kids pulling a wagon down the street picking up small limbs and debris.

In closing, the area has been dealt a devastating blow, but I truly believe we will all pull together and get through it.  Best of luck to the people who had major damage to their property.

How old were you when you first started programming?

I was 16.  We never had a computer at home.  I did not actually own a computer until I was 21.

How did you get started in programming?

My first exposure to computers in general came the summer between my junior and senior year in high school (1985) when I stayed the summer with my Aunt.  She worked in the computer lab at the local community college and took me to work with her each day.  I spent my time playing on one of the IBM PC’s.  From that point on I would buy the magazines with code samples in it, type in the programs and run them.  I will always credit my Aunt Shirley for getting me started – God Bless her soul.  She passed away last November.

What was your first language?

Basic/Pascal

What was the first real program you wrote?

A customer information input program (Dbase).

What languages have you used since you started programming?

Basic
Dbase
FoxPro
Visual FoxPro
TSQL
VBA
C#
ASP.NET

What was your first professional programming gig?

A company named DISC, Inc.  I loved working at that company and still keep in touch with the owners.  I basically wrote programs to do data conversions.

If you knew then what you know now, would you have started programming?

Yes.  I would have started much earlier in life if I could have.

If there is one thing you learned along the way that you would tell new developers, what would it be?

Find a mentor and pick, pick, pick their brain.  Read developer blogs, listen to development podcasts and attend area user groups.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had … programming?

Playing various pranks on my cubicle neighbor.

Who are you calling out?

John Dunlap
Mohammad Azam
Michael Koby
Andrew MacNeil
Ben Scheirman

Enthusiasm & Passion for Programming

I am currently working in a large company as a Developer/Analyst.  I work primarily with Visual FoxPro (Mid-Senior Level), but am striving to learn .NET (Beginner).

We are migrating our legacy software which is written in DOS FoxPro 2.5, VFP 3.0 and VFP 7.0 to .NET.  The new Windows application includes a WPF/C# front end and SQL Server back end.  We have a team that maintains the legacy applications (which is the one that I am on) and a team that is building the new application.  Sometimes, the lines cross and I do get to work on the new software. Because the lines do not cross as much as I would like, I find myself having to find ways to keep my enthusiasm at a decent level.

Every now and then I run across blogs and podcasts that help me with my enthusiasm and passion for development.  Last week’s Hanselminutes on the subject of Finding Passion for Software is a great example of the kind of content that really turns my thinking around – "maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel".

Below are some things that I do to keep myself enthusiastic:

  • Attend User Group meetings and Code Camps/Tech Fests – I cannot afford to go to big conventions like TechEd and VSLive, so free local area events are the next best thing.
  • Read development books and publications – There is so much content online, but I still feel that a hard copy every now and then is needed.  I subscribe to CoDe Magazine, MSDN Magazine and SQL Server Magazine as well as try to keep a book with me at all times.  That way even if I don’t have access to the internet, I can keep my learning in motion.
  • Listen to Podcasts on Development and general technology – there is a plethora of podcasts out there and new ones starting up constantly.
  • Watch online videos – Again, there is a ton of online tutorials. (Dime Casts, How Do I Videos, ASP.NET Tutorials, GridView Guy Video Tutorials)
  • Subscribe to blogs (XML)
  • Social Networking – There are a lot of Developers on Twitter and FriendFeed.  You really pick up a lot of information following other people in the Development Community.

In closing, my current work situation sometimes makes it difficult to stay interested in my chosen profession, but thanks to the abundant amount of resources, I seem to stay interested and enthused.

Personal – Thinking About My Aunt

My Aunt Shirley left this world this passed November (November 25, 2007).  This passed Monday (April 7th) she would have been 70.  I have started going through some of her pictures that were on her computer again – I have tried to previously, but it is has just been too difficult.

I ran across my favorite picture of her – one where she was handing a pop down to her baby sis (my Aunt Linda).

I talked to my Uncle Lee on Friday and he informed me that he is moving out of the house that he and Aunt Shirley lived in for 47 years.  I understand that he can’t help but be plagued by memories, but it is just hard to not be able to go to that house anymore.  I have been going there since I can remember.

Happy Birthday Aunt Shirley.

Personal – My Sweet Aunt

I lost my sweet Aunt Shirley at 5:18 this morning.  I can’t help but feel that I’ve lost my Mom all over again.  My Mom died in 1982 and ever since that time her two sisters have been like my Mother.

In the summer between my Junior and Senior year in High School (1985), I stayed with my Aunt Shirley a lot.  I would go to the College where she worked as a lab assistant in the computer lab.  She taught me the basics of the IBM PC and I spent all summer playing on and learning computers.  If it were not for that summer, I may not have even been in the computer field.

Aunt Shirley was a devoted Christian woman who loved God, Uncle Lee and had a passion for teddy bears and all things cute.  I remember how excited she was when I showed her the trailer to Happy Feet on her computer.  She said “I have to see that!!!”.

I also remember when I was younger and was on her side of town, I would call her from the pay phone (before cell phones) at the convenience store right next to their house and ask her if she had any plans for the next couple of hours.  If she would say “no, come on over”, I would tell her I would be there in a while.  Of course she expected me to be coming from home (30 miles away).  When I would knock on her door 2 minutes later she would say “GIRL!!!!”.  I loved surprising her like that.

In recent years she looked forward to weekly visits with her friends from San Jacinto College, quarterly shopping days with Aunt Linda and each December 20th with myself, Aunt Linda, Christie (Linda’s Daughter) and Caitlin (Christie’s daughter).  However, even with all of these things to look forward to, she would always look forward to getting back to Uncle Lee.  I can tell you one thing, she loved that man like nothing else.

I will miss her very much.  Before she left, I whispered in her ear “It’s Rhonda Aunt Shirley.  I love you so much.  You are my sweet Aunt Shirley, tell Mama I said I love her too — because I know you will see her.”

Shirley Terry | April 7, 1938 – November 25, 2007 | God Bless her and her family.

Happy Thanksgiving 2007

Sitting here watching the Thanksgiving Day parade on TV, I can’t help but think about my sweet Aunt Shirley who suffered a major stoke last night.  It just goes to show you how fast things can happen.

With this post, I urge people to reach out and tell your family and friends that you love them.  Don’t wait for holidays or tragedies to make you verbalize your love.

God Bless my sweet Aunt Shirley.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
